Today the children in our Kinder & Pre-Kinder rooms had a visit from the Little Sprouts Program.
They learnt all about the different parts of plants including the roots, stem and leaves and what the function of each is. They then tried to identify each part on a range of different plants.
They helped demonstrate how water and sunshine make plants grow.
Next they practiced being seeds in the ground as they learnt the actions to a song which had them sprout and then slowly grow really tall.
The children then played along to music using shakers made from recycled cups, paper and dried seeds.
The children then got to go outside in small groups to choose their own flower to grow!
Each child chose a biodegradable pot, filled it with soil, made a whole with their fingers and planted their chosen flower, either a marigold, viola or snapdragon.
The children then used their fingers to push down the soil really tight so that their flower didn’t fall out. Next, the children took it in turns to fill up a watering can at our water tank and water their new flower.
The children then left their flowers out in the sun until it was time to take them home this afternoon.
To follow up on such an exciting incursion the children did a pasting activity in which they created their own plants using a variety of materials as they focused on displaying their plants roots & leaves.
Teaching children about how the world around them works sparks their curiosity, creativity and abstract thinking.
Children who understand, respect and care for the environment become individuals who are conscious of their impact on the world, and strive towards environmental sustainability.
