Throwback Week Part 5/7
The Best Diet for Health - Originally posted in 2014
Next up is the popular Mediterranean diet. ~
This diet is a little different because of all of the other variables surrounding it. To keep pace with the previous post, the Mediterranean diet consists of…wait for it…a “dietary pattern that prevails in Mediterranean countries”. Ok, I know that was a horrible joke; however, I emphasized this because not all of the countries in the Mediterranean eat the same diet. That being said for the purpose of this discussion the Mediterranean diet would consist of: olive oil, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, beans and legumes, some dairy, whole grains, fish, and moderate wine consumption. This diet has also been associated with what are known as Blue Zones(TM), which are regions around the world where longevity and vitality are common. When the researchers looked at how the Mediterranean diet effected health they found that such a diet was associated with longer lived populations, better thought processing during aging, reduced risk for cardiovascular disease, and even some research showing a reduction in cancer risk. They also state that research had shown following a Mediterranean diet can have positive effects on lipoprotein levels, endothelium vasodilation, and insulin metabolism. It seems as though the Mediterranean diet has a lot to offer; however, as stated above there are also a lot of other variables in Mediterranean culture. Populations are often very connected and very social, allowing for individuals to feel valued. This trait alone allows for many positive outcomes. This is not to say that the diet has nothing to do it the health of the population, it is just to say it is helped out by the culture as well.
Has been shown to benefit multiple areas of health.
Absence of processed foods.
Moderate wine intake ~
Need to take into account the culture as well.
Could be time consuming.
Not one specific diet.
The Mediterranean diet is extremely beneficial when it comes to health and longevity; however, the culture it comes from also needs to be adopted to reap the full value.
